Escape the traditional tour and visit the most deserted beaches

Those arriving to Rio de Janeiro face the hard task of dividing their time for visiting the beautiful Carioca beaches. There are 86 km of shoreline. Escaping the traditional ones, but not less important Copacabana, Leblon and Ipanema, visitors may choose some more detached and deserted beaches such as Reserva, between Barra da Tijuca beach and Recreio dos Bandeirantes beach, where the erection of buildings of any kind is not allowed, and Grumari, surrounded by rocky slopes and with beautiful fauna and flora, composed of the characteristic rain forest ecosystem, both in the West Zone of the city.

But Rio’s shores still save a few lovely surprises for the visitors. After Recreio dos Bandeirantes and Macumba beach, a place teeming with surfers, there are three beautiful and environmental reserve beaches of incomparable beauty: Prainha; Abricó, the refuge of naturists and Grumari, largely used for family time. There are plenty of choices.

Those who love good waves should go to Prainha, the paradise of surfers with perfect waves and an indescribable natural beauty. At one hour distance from downtown Rio, Prainha (little beach), as its name says, has a small strip of sand 700 meters long, and a rough sea protected by hills covered with Rainforest. Located at the end of Recreio beach, it is best to get there early, to enjoy the sun, which hides behind the mountains in mid-afternoon. The kiosks offer healthy sandwiches, fruit juices and açaí (energetic frozen pulp).

Surf Bus Beach Tour company offers a bus adapted to carry 12 long boards, 20 surf boards, 10 fun boards and 15 body boards, with a load for 30 passengers. Departures every day starting at 7:00 a.m. at Largo do Machado, in the South Zone of the city, up to Prainha’s belvedere, going by the shores at Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon, São Conrado, Barra da Tijuca and Recreio, with a trilingual tour guide. During the trip of approximately 1h30, while admiring the beautiful view, passengers can watch surf movies and video clips on the Bus Beach TV set.

Another suggestion for a ride is the "Beach Tour" with Rio Adventures tourism agency. Made by jeeps along the Carioca coastlines, it takes about four hours. The tour starts in the South Zone and goes up to the West Zone, to Prainha beach, where tourists can choose in which beach they would like to spend more time. The tour costs R$ 125,00 per person.
